Paul Chek
Our Unique Musculoskeletal Assessment.
All our clients in person at Coconut Fitness perform a 90-minute CHEK assessment where we measure spinal alignment, pelvis position, muscle imbalances, core function, movement patterns and body fat percentage. All assessments are carried out by a Corrective Holistic Exercise Kinesiologist or CHEK for short.
This is usually the most comprehensive assessment that any of our clients have ever experienced. It is what differentiates a CHEK Practitioner to a gym-based Personal Trainer.
This assessment allows us to design a highly specific exercise programme for you. Most of our training begins with correctional work, where the focus is to re-align the body to its natural position through stretching and stabilisation exercises. From here we can build a solid base from which we can create the body shape you desire.
Our tailored programmes can focus on a range of goals from fat-burning exercise sessions and post-rehabilatation to sport-specific plans and lifestyle modifications.
Here is a brief summary of our CHEK assessment to give you some idea of the level of complexity and clinical expertise required.
You will not receive this down at your local gym or in any exercise class!
Forward Head Carriage
We measure the forward head posture using a CHEK Forward Head Caliper.
This measurement is to assess head deviation from a neutral position. Faulty posture of the head is a contributing factor to the onset and continuation of many postural imbalances.
The force of gravity causes an increase in neck tension, deformations with teeth, TMJ disorders, headaches and premature degeneration at the base of the spine.
Poor posture is a faulty relationship which induces strain and is less efficient in balancing the body over its base of support.
With the head in about 6cm in forward head posture, which is common, the weight of the head on the upper spine changes from 10 lbs to 30 lbs!
First Rib Angle
To assess the first rib angle we use a CHEK Posture Caliper.
This is an important measurement when diagnosing or preparing a treatment programme for conditions such as Upper Cross Syndrome, Thoracic Outlet Syndrome, Tension Headaches and Shoulder Pain Syndrome.
Using this measurement, we can design a corrective exercise programme to align thoracic posture and increase the range of motion at the cervical spine.
Pelvic Tilt
Pelvic tilt can be measured from the anterior superior iliac spine (ASIS) to the posterior superior iliac spine (PSIS) using the CHEK Posture Caliper.
Asymmetries of pelvic tilt can help diagnose an anterior pelvic tilt, posterior pelvic tilt, Lower Cross Syndrome or a Sway Back posture.
Using this knowledge, we can assign the correct stretching and strengthening protocol to realign the hips and back. Without this assessment you may be performing exercises that will exacerbate the condition!
Spinal Curves
Spinal curves are measured using the CHEK Inclinometer. We assess the curve of the thoracic and lumbar spine to determine the shape of the spine down to the specific degree. We also measure extension, flexion and rotation of the spine to provide a comprehensive overview of the back.
This helps us establish whether you have a healthy S-shaped spine or displaying faulty posture with an increased thoracic spine, increased lumbar spine or a Flat Back. These spinal disorders are the root cause of many lower back pain problems.
Only then can we design an individualised programme to correct these imbalances. Many clients we see are simply doing the wrong exercises and stretches for their condition. Surgery can usually be prevented when you naturally realign the body.
Muscle Testing
Muscle testing can be performed using a Goniometer. It is essential to measure the length-tension relationships of muscles to restore and maintain appropriate range of motion at the joints, good alignment and muscle balance.
Identifying which muscles are tight, loose or weak helps us develop a safe and effective programme to correct imbalances and misalignment using the proper exercises.
Many cases of lower back pain are related to faulty posture and are corrected or alleviated by restoring balance in the body.
Core Functioning
We can assess the functioning of the core musculature using a blood pressure cuff. This allows us to measure the strength of the Transverse Abdominis (TVA), also known as the abdominal wall.
Several other tests are also performed including Standing TVA Activation, Multifidus Test, Upper Abdominal Test, Lower Abdominal Coordination and Oblique Dominance.
Considering all movement emanates from the core, these types of tests are essential in designing your tailored programme with the right core exercises.
Most clients we see also wish to tone their midsection but in order to do this we must first ensure the core is functioning correctly!
Body Fat Reading
We record your body fat by using specialised body fat calipers. If your goal is to lose body fat then we need to determine your percentage of fat to muscle.
Your specific programme will be designed so you burn body fat, whilst maintaining or increasing lean muscle. This is the most effective way to reduce fat and promote body tone and shape.
Regular reassessments will help you know you’re on the right track to achieving your goal.
Traditional scales only measure your net weight rather than the ratio of body fat to muscle, which can often be very misleading and discouraging!
We offer CHEK assessments as part of our bespoke Personal Training service offered exclusively to the following areas in Cheshire: Warrington, Stockton Heath, Appleton, Walton, Grappenhall, Thelwall, Lymm, Knutsford, Alderley Edge, Wilmslow, Hale, Bowdon and surrounding areas.
